The image of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix has been re-created with 4,000 Fender plectrums and went on public display yesterday. The mosaic was created by Manchester artist Ed Chapman who was commissioned by the guitar maker to mark the release of a new album of studio material by Hendrix.
The Hey Joe icon, who died at the age of 27 in London, has been immortalised in the plectrum portrait, which measures 105 x 80cm and was unveiled at the launch of the new album “ People, Hell and Angels.”
Artist Ed said: “I was totally thrilled when I was called by Fender and asked to create my version of Jimi Hendrix’s iconic image and it’s a real honour. Jimi’s sister. Janie L. Hendrix, will see it at the store and I’d love to hear her thoughts on the portrait. I usually work in ceramic tile, but plectrums are a great medium to create art and I hope they are a fitting tribute to an amazing musician.”
Mr Chapman has been noted in the art world for his recognisable style which pushes the boundaries of mosaic work. He has also created portraits made from coins, glass, mobile phones and even sugar cubes which have been sold and displayed around the world.
The Hendrix portrait is on display at a special Hendrix ‘pop-up store’ in Ganton Street, Soho, West London, which will be open until April 12th to promote the new album and related Jimi merchandise. Also , in the basement of the shop, there are ‘Jimi Hendrix Master Classes’ by experts from the Fender guitar company.
